John McNerney has vast experience in education as a Headteacher and National Leader of Education (NLE). He has 26 years’ experience as a Headteacher in Manchester schools, 17 years as Headteacher of St Peter’s RC High, leading on the establishment of the school and taking it to Ofsted judgements of good and outstanding. In his role as a NLE he has wide experience of supporting schools in difficulty and providing training on educational issues.
As a Headteacher working with Manche ster schools and Manchester City Council, John led on the establishment of the Manchester Schools’ Alliance (MSA), a co-operative, not for profit, schools’ led self-improvement company; the vast majority of Manchester schools are members of the MSA. John chairs the MSA Board. He has also led on the establishment of the MSA Teaching School Alliance, now known as Teach Manchester. The teaching school provides extensive support and training for Manchester schools and is a key element in Manchester Local Authority’s school improvement strategy.
John has experience of governance at primary, secondary and sixth form level. At present he is a sixth form college vice chair of governors and member of an interim executive board supporting a school in special measures. He has Master’s Degrees in Education and in English.
